Getting the perfect timber for your construction projects

Sheets — Tags: , — Booker Timber @ 9:30 am

If you’re involved in any form of construction project, you’ll know how important it is to source the right materials. Completing building work is hard enough without having to deal with complications caused by a lack of resources.

The good news is, as long as you know where to look, it’s now easy to get your hands on superb construction supplies. For example, here at Booker Timber we offer an impressive range of timbers, including cut to size chipboard and much more. If you’re on the lookout for good quality, accurately cut and shaped wood, we’re the go-to provider.

Demand on the rise?

It seems as though demand for resources like this may be on the rise among construction firms in the UK. According to recent figures, activity in the sector is picking up.

The Markit/CIPS Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 49.4 in April from 47.2 in March. Although this was slightly below the 50 level that divides growth from contraction, it was well above economists’ expectations of 48.

Also, Markit stated that employment levels were “broadly stable” in April and added that a rise in optimism about the year ahead helped to steady overall staffing levels. Of course, if conditions continue to improve within the industry, more personnel may be taken on.

A bounce back

Responding to the findings, senior economist at Markit Tim Moore stated that the industry bounced back following the disruption to work caused by freezing weather earlier in 2013. He added that higher levels of residential house building also contributed to the increase in activity.

The expert went on to note: “UK construction sector output was closer to stabilisation than at any time since October 2012. The overall survey findings are an early indication that construction will act as less of a drag on UK GDP over the second quarter of 2013.”

Caution

Adding a note of caution however, senior economist at IHS Global Insight Howard Archer said: “The sector undeniably still faces significant headwinds, notably including limited public investment and spending, a still weak economy, comparatively limited housing market activity and problems in getting funding for large-scale projects.

“The construction sector will be fervently hoping that both the economy and the housing market see sustained improvement over the coming months, even if only limited, and that this stimulates building work.”

New EU Timber Laws on Way

CNC Cutting — Tags: , , — Booker Timber @ 9:22 am

New European rules, to come into force on March 3, will ban the selling of illegally harvested timber or timber products and outline how those who trade on the EU market will need to comply.

The new legislation covers a wide selection of goods, from solid wood products to plywood and sheets for veneering. And the rules are the first in Europe to halt the illegal timber trade, although a similar law is already in place to cover the market in the United States.

In Britain, organisations such as the National Measurement Office (NMO) will be responsible for checking compliance with the new legislation, and imposing penalties for failures to comply.

The British Woodworking Federation, which has published a six-page guide to the legislation for members, said: “Any joinery company buying and selling timber products from within the EU market, or importing, will be affected by the new law, although by how much will vary.

“In some cases, compliance may just be a question of recording sales and purchases, in others, more complex systems could be needed to reduce any potential risk of selling illegal timber or timber products.”

Merchants are being encouraged to make themselves familiar with the new legislation, and how their responsibilities could change once it becomes law. At the same time, further clarification is due to be made over the next few months as to what exactly businesses need to do, as fresh information from the relevant authorities and monitoring organisations becomes available.

Timber that is Environmentally and Economically Sound

When you ask people in Britain what their two chief concerns are right now, most of them will answer you with ‘the economy’ and ‘the environment’. Indeed, economic growth has been much slower than hoped and the major industrial nations of the world are still dragging their heels with regard to the environment.

Sourcing timber
The state of economy and concern for the environment is very much in the mind of many companies that need to source timber for their operations. These companies generally have less money in their budgets than they once did and know that their customers will insist that the timber they use must be environmentally friendly in both its sourcing and its operations.

Thankfully, help is at hand

Precision cutting
We here at Booker Timber are timber merchants who understand the concerns of businesses and consumers alike. Our environmental awareness and cost-effective operations means that we can provide a fast and professional service that delivers accurate results with eco-friendly timber.
Our hi-tech optimisation software enables us to calculate the most efficient way to cut all kinds of materials, from cut to size chipboard to MDF sheets. This precision cutting means that not only is the amount of waste for each order considerably reduced, but also that customers may well require less boards to complete their order. Happily, the consequences of this are that both the planet and our customers’ budgets get a much needed helping hand.

Guaranteed accuracy with CNC cutting

CNC Cutting — Tags: , , — Booker Timber @ 1:58 pm

If you want to order cut to size chipboard and other such provisions, you are no doubt seeking accuracy. After all, if the items you receive are not quite the right size or shape, you may not be able to use them, or you might have to send them back to the manufacturer for adjustment. All of this takes time and effort and it may cause you to miss deadlines.

The problem is that often companies claim they are capable of providing the necessary level of precision when in fact they are not. This might be because the team involved lack the necessary skill and experience, or because they have to make do with inadequate tools.

However, here at Booker Timber there are no such problems. Over the years, we have invested in a full range of hi-tech machinery, as well as a fantastic workforce, meaning we are able to provide you with the upmost level of accuracy.

For example, we use state of the art computer numerical controlled (CNC) machinery coupled with powerful software so that we can achieve the desired outcomes. Indeed, our CNC cutting equipment is among the best the world. We can even cut with within 0.1mm accuracy.

So, if you want total certainty when you order plywood sheets and other such provisions, you have come to the right place. Also, we can handle sheets of up to six metres long and up to four metres wide, with a board thickness of up to nine centimetres.
